Travel from Home

A few months back Mandy from The Momma Society started a "Travel at Home" series on her Instagram where each week she and her kids "travel" to a new country. They read books, make crafts, eat foods, and learn basic phrases from that country. I immediately fell in love with the idea, but deemed myself too busy and just continued watching her adventures.

Well, time for some real talk here. The murder of George Floyd happened and shook up our country in a much needed way. It has had me doing a lot of thinking and learning. I realized how important it is that I teach my children about diversity and other cultures, and how well this could tie in. We spent the month of June having discussions about race and learning about Black music for Black Music Month. These are conversations we will continue having.

Going forward, I have decided for us to tackle 1 country a month to give myself plenty of time. As this is a learning experience not only for our children, but Tyler and I, I have been doing a lot of research. When selecting a country I look into their values, culture, and any notable people so I can make sure we're educating ourselves on that. From there I find books that align with those values and take place in that country. Then I pick some new foods to make/try, a craft or 2 that ties in, and movies or shows to watch to learn more. We will get out our map, show Henry where we're traveling to and begin.
