Travel from Home: Mexico

Hola! Last month for our travels we went to Mexico! National Hispanic Heritage Month begins in September so we felt it was a good time to learn about the influence of Hispanic Americans to our history, culture, and beyond. I'll admit, it was a very busy month for us so we didn't get to dive in as much as I'd have liked. Our focuses for the month were family, art (poetry, murals, music), and Frida Kahlo and fortunately, we were able to touch on all of those.

Henry is going through a bit of a phase right now and hasn't been wanting to read, but if I start reading to Leo or myself, he seems to creep over and join in. However, we didn't end up reading 1 of the books - The Princess and the Warrior. I've heard great things about it and we'll definitely revisit at some point. What Can You do with a Paleta is a cute, quick read talking about colorful, delicious paletas! Frida Kahlo and her Animalitos is actually one we've been meaning to buy. It's a beautifully illustrated story about famous artist Frida and what inspired her. We loved looking at all the animals and their vibrant colors. Lastly, my 2 favorites were Green is a Chili Pepper, which goes through the colors in a fun rhyming way that makes learning the Spanish words easier and Abuela. Abuela is the fantastical story of a little girl and her grandma through their city. I absolutely loved the illustrations, especially the ones of all the people in their apartments in the city. Henry and Leo seemed to enjoy them too.

We watched Coco which was perfect timing with Dia De Muertos and Halloween coming up. Henry doesn't like Halloween as its "scary", but I think this helped to realize it doesn't have to be. We also watch a lot of Handy Manny which is perfect for learning simple Spanish phrases.

Now onto the food -I love Mexican food! It is my favorite, but unfortunately Covid has made it so we haven't visited our favorite Mexican restaurant in quite some time. We make enchiladas quite frequently so we decided to try something new - Chilaquiles. We'll share more about those in another post, but I'll simply say they weren't a hit. Don't fret though! We ordered tamales from a very well known local place we get our Christmas tamales from. They were excellent! I picked up some candy there as well which Henry loved. Keep an eye out for that blog post in the next week - it'll be a good one! We also enjoyed some Paletas that my local grocery story carries.

I'd planned for us to play Loteria and that just didn't happen, but that's okay! We had a good month focusing on family which was one of our main goals.

Adios! Next month we're heading to... India!
